Oklahoma City commuters are in for a long season of orange cones and reduced lanes, as detailed by a recent Oklahoma Department of Transportation traffic advisory. Highlights from the Oklahoma Department of Transportation, which can be read in full here, include the closure of the westbound I-44 on-ramp from S.W. 59th St. starting at 7 p.m. Monday until 6 a.m. the following Tuesday to make room for a new overhead sign.
Commuters facing the squeeze on I-44 will also find the East and West SH-152 narrowed and the eastbound I-44 on-ramp from 74th St. shuttered. Due to a corridor widening project, these adjustments are expected to persist through the fall, said the advisory. When reaching the I-240 interchange, travelers should brace for narrowed lanes and sporadic ramp closures as a result of ongoing improvements that will linger through the year 2025, as reported by the Oklahoma Department of Transportation.
Further complicating commutes, I-40 will experience narrowing between Meridian Ave. and May Ave., with nightly disruptions through the fall as part of a bridge and pavement rehabilitation project. The convolutions continue with the I-44 ramps at N.W. 10th St. sealed off through the summer of 2026 for a City of Oklahoma City bridge initiative, as per the Oklahoma Department of Transportation.
Midwest City drivers will likewise grapple with similar constraints on I-40 between I-240 and Town Center Dr. due to lane reductions that will extend through 2025. For those looking to navigate this maze, officials recommend considering I-240 and US-62/N. 23rd St. as alternative routes. The ripples of renovation extend with the narrowing of lanes on I-35 between Memorial Rd. and US-77/2nd St. in Edmond, a resurfacing and bridge project destined to taper through the summer of 2025, as noted by the Oklahoma Department of Transportation.
Elsewhere, SH-4 undergoes an alignment shift as construction activity persists, affecting traffic from Wilshire Blvd. to the SH-3/NW Expressway. SH-37/S.E. 4th St. in Moore has shut its gates to vehicles between Broadway Ave. and Tower Dr. as they lay the groundwork for a new railroad bridge, a closure set to queue through the summer of 2026. Amidst all these ongoing developments, the advisory also brings a sliver of good news: Anderson Rd. and its corresponding I-40 on and off-ramps are now open, offering some relief to the cyclone of closures, as per the Oklahoma Department of Transportation.
