A man is dead, and another person is in custody for questioning after late-night gunfire rattled Old East Dallas yesterday, according to police. Officers were called to the area off Samuell Boulevard shortly before 10:30 p.m., where they found a man shot and critically wounded. He was rushed to a nearby hospital, where he later died, as detectives worked to figure out what set off the violence.
Scene and police response
Responding officers arrived at reports of shots fired and located an adult man suffering from a gunshot wound off Samuell Boulevard. He was taken to a local hospital and later died, according to FOX 4. Not long after the shooting, a man called 911 and claimed he was involved, the outlet reported. He was detained and brought in for questioning as part of the investigation.
Police have not publicly identified the victim, saying they are working to notify his family while processing the scene and collecting evidence.
Neighborhood context
The deadly shooting adds to a year of unsettling incidents in Old East Dallas that have residents increasingly on edge about what happens in the neighborhood after dark. In June, for instance, a separate shooting that ended in a crash left one person dead and two people in custody, according to The Dallas Morning News, underscoring how violent confrontations have repeatedly spilled onto local streets.
Investigation and next steps
Dallas police say homicide detectives are leading the case and that the investigation remains active, per FOX 4. It is not yet clear whether the man detained after calling 911 will face any charges.
Authorities are asking anyone with information to contact investigators as they canvass the area, look for surveillance video, and track down potential witnesses in an effort to piece together how a Saturday night turned deadly off Samuell Boulevard.
