A deadly shooting has occurred on Jacksonville's Westside at the Paxon Shopping Center Plaza parking lot, leaving one man dead and another injured on Wednesday night. According to the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office, officers responded to the scene at approximately 8:10 p.m., following reports of the shooting at 750 Edgewood Avenue North, News4JAX reported.
Upon arrival, authorities discovered two men with gunshot wounds. Both victims were swiftly transported to a local hospital, where one succumbed to his injuries. The second victim is currently in stable condition. As investigations continue, "individuals" have been taken to the Police Memorial Building for interviews, while the motives behind the shooting remain unclear, as stated in a release obtained by First Coast News. Notably, the plaza has been a source of distress among residents due to persistent late-night noise complaints stemming from large gatherings, often accompanied by loud music.
The area has seen a significant number of police dispatches throughout the year, with a total of 97 calls including disturbances involving noise, fights, and armed disputes, News4JAX detailed in their report. The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office has been actively addressing these complaints, but the issue has persisted for about two years.
While authorities believe that this shooting was an isolated incident, and "there is no additional threat to the community," they urge anyone with information to come forward, according to First Coast News. Members of the public are encouraged to contact the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office by phone, email, or anonymously through Crime Stoppers, to aid in the investigation and in the hopes of finding closure for this recent act of violence that has rocked an already troubled community.
