Honolulu police are investigating a brazen overnight burglary at a University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa faculty housing complex in Mānoa Valley, after a suspect slipped into an occupied apartment while residents were home and made off with several items. The break-in happened in a tight window between 11:30 p.m. Thursday and 1 a.m. Friday, according to officials. UH security and Honolulu Police are working the case, and so far authorities have not announced any arrests.
What campus officials said
According to the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa Department of Public Safety, the burglary happened at the Kau’iokahaloa Nui faculty housing complex. Investigators say the suspect got inside through unlocked lanai doors and removed several items while the residents were still in the unit. The department noted that the Honolulu Police Department is leading the investigation and urged anyone with information to contact DPS.
Police response and witness tips
As reported by KITV, investigators have not released a suspect description, and at the time of that report, no arrests had been made. Authorities are asking residents to review any available surveillance footage and to share video or tips that could help identify people or vehicles seen near the complex during the overnight timeframe.
Recent campus incidents
This latest case is part of a string of property crimes flagged on and around campus this year. In June, a burglary at the Wa’ahila Faculty Apartments, where entry was made through lanai glass doors, was detailed by UH Mānoa DPS. The department has since posted multiple alerts reminding the campus community to lock doors and report suspicious activity promptly.
How residents can protect themselves
DPS recommends that residents keep valuables secured and out of sight, close and lock all doors and windows even when sleeping, and, when possible, install cameras or alarm systems. Officials also stress that residents should not confront suspicious individuals. Instead, anyone who believes a residence has been entered or who sees suspicious activity is urged to call UH Mānoa DPS at (808) 956-6911 or HPD at 911.
