
The Ozaukee County Sheriff's Office announced that Corporal Michael Schmidt was named Law Enforcement Officer of the Year by Belgium Memorial American Legion Post 412. In a social media post, the department outlined Schmidt’s service since 2007, including his roles as Patrol Corporal and Shift Commander, his work with the Crash Reconstruction Unit, and his duties as a Field Training Officer and Taser Instructor, as well as his participation in Peer Support and Critical Incident Debrief Teams. The department also mentioned that he previously received an award for a lifesaving act in which he applied a tourniquet that prevented the loss of a limb.
In addition to his law enforcement duties, Schmidt serves as a volunteer firefighter and EMT with the Belgium Fire Department. He is also a husband and father. The department stated that his professional and community roles reflect the values of Honor, Integrity, Duty, and Loyalty. The announcement of his recognition has received local attention and invited the community to acknowledge Corporal Schmidt’s accomplishment.
