A disturbing act of vandalism shook the community of Petaluma earlier this month, leaving the dark imprint of hatred on the everyday comings and goings of its downtown area. The Petaluma Police Department has reported the arrest of a local man after a vehicle was defaced with racist slurs and Nazi symbols. The incident, a striking example of hate unleashed, happened sometime between December 1 and December 9.
After a victim reported the deed, the police worked diligently to unravel the threads of evidence, inevitably pulling out the identity of 20-year-old Corey Newman from the tangle. Surveillance footage from the parking garage where the vehicle had been parked proved to be a key piece in the puzzle. The Petaluma Police have stated that the capture of this footage allowed them to identify Newman as the perpetrator positively.
Newman was located by officers during a traffic stop on December 24 and taken into custody. According to a statement from the Petaluma Police Department, he's facing charges of "594(a)(1) Penal Code – Vandalism: Defacing Property" and "422.6(b) Penal Code – Commission of a Hate Crime." These charges emphasize the city's stance against actions motivated by bias and bigotry.
