As San Francisco battles the aftermath of a significant electrical outage, affecting neighborhoods from the Presidio to Golden Gate Park, PG&E has worked tirelessly to restore power to its customers. Yesterday at 2 p.m., the utility company managed to bring back electricity to approximately 114,000 customers, leaving around 17,000 still in the dark. PG&E expects to fully restore service by no later than 2 p.m. today and continues to update its outage map and communicate estimated times to affected residents.

According to a statement obtained by PG&E, "The damage from the fire in our substation was significant and extensive and the repairs and safe restoration will be complex." They mobilized every available engineer and electrician to facilitate the complex work plan, which demands a high safety focus. Initially, the majority of customers saw their service restored six to eight hours following the blackout onset, which began at 1:09 p.m. last Saturday and peaked two hours later, impacting around 130,000 customers. Importantly, no injuries were reported among coworkers or the public.

In an effort to support the community, PG&E has partnered with the 211 Providers Network and the California Foundation for Independent Living Centers. They aim to ensure wellness checks and access to resources like food vouchers and hotel placements for vulnerable customers. Furthermore, a Community Resource Center has been established in the Richmond District at 251 18th Ave., providing power stations, free Wi-Fi, water, snacks, and customer support.

Meanwhile, Daniel Lurie noted on social media that over 1,500 people had visited the Richmond Rec Center for device charging and access to water. The center will open again at 9 a.m. for those affected by the outage. Aligning with PG&E's expectations, power is to be fully restored by 2 p.m. today. Additionally, the community must not overlook the flood advisory issued by the National Weather Service for San Francisco, which remains in effect until 11:15 a.m.

PG&E encourages residents to continue taking precautionary measures: keeping refrigerators closed, disconnecting appliances to avoid overloaded circuits, and using generators exclusively outdoors. In the event of a downed power line, the public should maintain a safe distance, contact 911, and then promptly report the incident to PG&E at 1-800-743-5002.
