The Philadelphia Department of Public Health is broadening its horizons with a rebranding of its Maternal Health Division. Now coined the Division of Reproductive, Adolescent, and Child Health (ReACH), this change aims to encapsulate a more inclusive representation of the division's services and patient populations. The adjustment was announced on Friday, signaling a shift towards a comprehensive approach to reproductive and family health that spans from childhood to adulthood. The City of Philadelphia's website detailed the department's renewed pledge to the well-being of its community members at each life stage.
"This is a critical moment for Philadelphia to reaffirm our commitment to all facets of reproductive health throughout the life course," Dr. Palak Raval-Nelson, Commissioner, Philadelphia Department of Public Health, told the City of Philadelphia's news outlet. As the division carrying a critical importance for the demographics it serves, ReACH is not just a name—it's a pledge to cover the health needs of women, birthing Philadelphians, children, and teens.
Along with the name change, Dr. Aasta Mehta, Director of ReACH, elucidated the division's ongoing focus and its initiatives designed to undergird reproductive justice and health equity. Efforts include financial support for organizations grappling with abortion access and intimate partner violence, tackling period poverty through free menstrual product dispensers, and spearheading a storytelling campaign to assist pregnant Philadelphians and parenting substance abusers. Dr. Mehta affirmed, "Our new name makes it clear that we serve women, birthing Philadelphians, children, and teens—and that we’re committed to supporting their health from childhood through adolescence into adulthood, pregnancy, parenting, and beyond," as reported by the City of Philadelphia's official website.

With Room2Breathe, a pivotal asthma home visiting program that has seen success and is continuously evaluated, it’s evident that ReACH seeks to breathe new life into healthcare for all Philadelphians and take a robust public health stance via direct services, surveillance, education, and inclusive initiatives.
