In a demonstration of resilience and community solidarity, residents of Phoenix have come together for the fourth consecutive year to honor the memory of David Denogean, a 30-year-old teacher whose life was tragically cut short. Denogean was shot and killed while walking his dog in November 2022, near 12th Street and Bethany Home Road—an act of violence that has yet to see justice as the case remains without resolution. People gathered on Saturday night, as reported by FOX 10 Phoenix, to contribute to a toy drive established in Denogean's name, transforming grief into generosity.

Despite the grim backdrop of an unsolved crime, the Denogean family has chosen to focus on the uplifting act of giving back to their community. "It was a tragic event for us, but this is meant to be a happy time, and it's all for the kids," Frank Denogean, David's father, told FOX 10 Phoenix in an interview. The toy drive has grown year after year, bolstered by the community's desire to keep David's generous spirit alive. Wrapped presents filled a room where children could choose a surprise gift, all while remembering a man who dedicated his life to education and the community.

According to a 13 WMAZ report, the community's efforts have not waned with each passing year; instead, they have garnered even larger support. "We’ve had a lot of people come out and contribute to making this bigger than what it has been in the past years," Daniel Denogean, David's brother, expressed his gratitude for those who keep turning out to support the toy drive.

As the pleasant melancholy of the holiday gathered around them, the family also used the occasion to remind the public that the search for justice is not over. "We’ve learned a couple of months ago that they had a suspect who murdered somebody else the very next day – not to say it was him because you’re innocent until proven guilty, but until someone comes forth, we want to keep David’s memory in the community," said Frank Denogean as per FOX 10 Phoenix. The Phoenix Police and Silent Witness are involved in the ongoing investigation, offering a reward of up to $20,000 for information leading to an arrest. Donations to raise the reward can be made, and anyone with information is urged to come forward by calling Silent Witness at 480-948-637 or the Phoenix Police directly.

While the Denogean family copes with their loss, they remain staunch in their efforts to foster positivity and action in David's name. As the season of giving unfolds, they and the broader Phoenix community transform a space of sorrow into one where children's smiles honor the enduring legacy of a man who loved to teach, to coach, and to give.
