Arizona's cosplaying community truly stepped up its game in 2025, donning meticulously crafted costumes that spoke volumes about its passion and skills. Phoenix played host to a spectacular array of characters, ranging from superhero stalwarts to viral anime figures, as enthusiasts gathered at events like Game On Expo, UwU Con, and Phoenix Fan Fusion. Particularly notable was the wave of cosplays inspired by the blockbuster animated film "KPop Demon Hunters," which became a significant trend after its release on Netflix. Phoenix geek Jessika Ros, as covered by Phoenix New Times, dressed as the character Zoey, joining her co-hosts in coordinating costumes that were all the rage this year.
One standout, Ravenscraft Cosplay, otherwise known as Kyle Appel from Tucson, brought to life an incredible Lich King armor replica from the World of Warcraft franchise. As per photos featured by the Phoenix New Times, his costume was a masterpiece of craftsmanship that captured the attention of many at the events across the Valley. Andre Washington, known for his Ronin Kasai persona, mesmerized onlookers with his versatile portrayals, shifting from a meticulously feathered Hawkman to a Predator's Yautja. By October, he amazed once more with a new rendition from Black Myth: Wukong at UwU Con.
In addition, a group of cosplayers collectively channelled the might of Warhammer 40K's towering mechs at the Fan Fusion's cosplay masquerade. Their presence, according to the Phoenix New Times, was both immense and mesmerizing, emphasizing the grandeur of cosplay craftsmanship. Captured during this past year's events, these cosplayers truly embodied the characters they portrayed, displaying profound dedication to the source material.
Looking back at Fan Fusion 2024, it's clear that the bar for Phoenix cosplay was already high. Photos captured by Joe Rondone for The Republic, as seen in an AZ Central gallery, showcased top-tier efforts, including Michele Dickinson's Warhammer 40k Battle sister and Joe Mendola as Deadpool, hinting at the creativity and fervor gripping the Arizona cosplaying scene even then, setting the stage for what was to come the following year.
No matter the character, from Star Wars to fan favorites like Barbie spotted in 2024, Phoenix's cosplay community continually rises to the occasion, pushing the envelope on creativity and talent with each costume reveal. This year's embrace of "KPop Demon Hunters" exemplifies just one of those pivotal moments in cosplay culture, fully recognizing the brilliance and enthusiasm that fuels this unique art form—something we eagerly anticipate evolving in the years ahead.
