A fire broke out at a Phoenix junkyard on Thursday evening, engulfing approximately 30 cars in flames, as reported by Fox 10 Phoenix. The incident, triggered near 27th Avenue and Broadway Road before 5 p.m., summoned a rapid response from firefighters.
Upon their arrival, emergency crews found the vehicles ablaze and escalated the situation to a first alarm, according to AZFamily. This upgrade in response, which signals the need for additional personnel and equipment, was seen battling out of control the flames for about 45 minutes before gaining the upper hand on the fire.
Phoenix Fire Capt. DJ Lee, in a statement obtained by Fox 10 Phoenix, said, "Firefighters quickly secured a water supply and took multiple handlines in to fight the blaze. The fire was balanced to a first alarm due to the size of the yard and the amount of cars on fire." No injuries were reported in the incident, which added a stroke of relief to the situation.
The cause of the fire remains unknown and is currently under investigation. While crews put out most of the fire, blanketing the south Phoenix sky with a huge column of smoke was seen from miles away. No bystanders or workers were hurt in the junkyard during the fiery episode.
