The post-holiday season brings a familiar task to residents, deciding what to do with the once-adorned Christmas tree. For those in Phoenix with live trees to dispatch, the city's Public Works Department is offering an eco-friendly solution. Beginning December 26 and running through January 9, 2026, Phoenix residents can drop off their live Christmas trees, wreaths, and garlands at various designated parks for recycling, at absolutely no cost, ultimately diverting leftover holiday greenery from the landfill to the compost pile.
As reported by the City of Phoenix official newsroom, this initiative is part of the waste management department's efforts to promote sustainability. The trees collected, are to be composted at the 27th Avenue Compost Facility, ensuring a greener start to the new year. It's an attempt to keep flammable dry material out of homes and landfills, and giving it a second life as compost instead. There's a catch though, all trees must be stripped of their festive decorations and lights. This step is crucial to maintain a clean composting process.
For those ready to bid adieu to their tannenbaums, drop-off sites are strategically situated throughout the city in the following parks:
- Cactus Park
- Cesar Chavez Park
- Deer Valley Park
- Desert Foothills Park
- Desert West Park
- El Reposo Park
- Los Olivos Park
- Madison Park
- Marivue Park
- Mountain View Park
- Mountain Vista Park
- Paradise Valley Park
- Sereno Park
- Washington Park
Residents are instructed to place their trees only within, the marked areas of the designated parks. This request underscores the need for order and efficiency in the recycling process. According to the city's news release, Public Works also offers other disposal methods, including transfer station drop-offs and bulk trash collection for those unable to utilize the park drop-offs. This year’s program affirms the City of Phoenix's ongoing commitment to sustainability and public service, making it easier for residents to transition into an eco-conscious new year.
