As Christmas Eve descended upon Phoenix, a flurry of last-minute shoppers took to the stores, embracing what can only be described as an annual tradition of urgency and anticipation. According to a report by FOX 10 Phoenix, local supermarket Safeway remained a beacon for those seeking last-minute holiday essentials and stocking stuffers, with shoppers appearing calm amidst the holiday rush.
Patrons scurried for gift cards, toothbrushes, toothpaste, floss, and candy, items that reflect both the necessity and indulgence of the season. "You need that after you have the candy," one shopper humorously noted in a statement obtained by FOX 10 Phoenix. Amidst the holiday cheer, booze also made the cut for some, with statements like, "Pie and a little bit of appetizers just to get us through," and a more candid, "alcohol." "I would definitely say family can make you want to drink a little more," a shopper added, capturing the mixed sentiments that come with family gatherings.
However, the essence of the holiday spirit wasn't lost in the hustle, as shoppers also sought to wrap up the festive preparations with gift wrapping. "A lot of YouTube and hopefully my girlfriend doesn't get upset about my wrapping style but I think she'll be happy with the gift and that's the important part," a person was quoted in the Yahoo News interview, highlighting the endearing, if not comical, efforts to maintain the holiday surprise.
The palpable joy in finding the perfect gift also resonated among the shoppers, with one sharing a special find with Yahoo News: "I found this Nightmare Before Christmas little train for this girl that lives with me that's like a sister and loves the Nightmare Before Christmas." These moments, tucked between the shelves and aisles, serve as reminders of the connections and sentiments that anchor the holiday season.
The anticipation for Santa's arrival was equally infectious. While the clock ticked closer to the final hour, Safeway's extended hours until 11 p.m. on Christmas Eve, and Walgreens' decision to maintain a 24/7 schedule throughout the week provided a safety net for those very last-minute needs.
