Authorities reported that a man in his 30s died last night following a crash at the intersection of Humphrey Road and Butte House Road in Sutter County. Emergency crews responded shortly after 5:45 p.m., and the driver was transported to a hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries. No other injuries were reported. Officers noted that the pickup involved went through the rural T-intersection before the collision.
CBS Sacramento reported that the vehicle involved was a red Chevrolet Silverado that went through the T-intersection. The California Highway Patrol confirmed the driver was not wearing a seat belt and said the crash did not result in any road closures.
Intersection Has Been Targeted For Safety Upgrades
State transportation officials have proposed safety improvements at the SR-20/Humphrey Road intersection, including a potential roundabout or traffic signal, according to a Caltrans news release reported by Territorial Dispatch. Earlier this year, the county and Caltrans sought public input on changes aimed at reducing severe collisions at the rural T-intersection.
CHP Investigating Possible Impairment
The CHP told CBS Sacramento that a possible DUI is still under investigation and that officers found an open alcoholic beverage container inside the vehicle. Investigators are working to determine what caused the pickup to travel through the intersection and plan to release additional details as the investigation continues.
Why Restraints And Design Matter
Federal safety guidance from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention notes that wearing a seat belt reduces the risk of death and serious injury by about half for older children and adults. The Federal Highway Administration identifies roundabouts and other intersection improvements as proven measures to decrease both the frequency and severity of crashes at high-risk junctions.
