A 40-year-old Vacaville man is fighting for his life after being shot multiple times in the 600 block of Rocky Hill Road early Tuesday morning, in an attack police say does not appear to be random. Officers responding around 2:20 a.m. to reports of gunfire found the wounded man and treated him until firefighters and medics arrived to rush him to a nearby hospital, where he remained in critical condition as of Tuesday morning.
According to CBS Sacramento, investigators are still trying to determine who was involved and what led up to the shooting, and police have not released any suspect information. The outlet reports that while police believe the shooting was targeted, they have said it does not present a known danger to the public. Emergency dispatch records reviewed by Code 3 News - Solano placed the scene near the intersection with Markham Avenue.
A Corridor With a History of Gunfire
This is not the first time gunfire has erupted along this stretch of Vacaville. Just two months earlier, on July 13, police investigated reported gunfire in a shopping center parking lot near East Monte Vista Avenue and Markham Avenue, an incident Hoodline covered in Shots Fired In Vacaville Lot. Further back, other gun violence has also been reported in Vacaville.
Tuesday's shooting also follows other recent gun violence around the city. In July, Vacaville detectives investigated afternoon street gunfire on Bishop Drive that wounded a driver in the leg, eventually tracking a second vehicle to neighboring Fairfield, as Hoodline reported in its coverage of the Bishop Drive shooting. Earlier in the year, on February 10, police opened a homicide investigation after a man was shot and killed, according to a report from that time.
Technology Aiding the Investigation
Vacaville police now have new tools to help crack cases like this one. In July 2025, the city launched a $4.4 million Real-Time Information Center, built with a state grant to integrate surveillance feeds and license plate readers for faster incident response, the City of Vacaville announced. Vacaville police also have a Drone-as-a-First-Responder program.
That same real-time camera and license-plate-reader network was credited in Hoodline's coverage of a recent foot chase and loaded gun arrest as a key asset for detectives working gun cases across the city. If investigators identify a suspect in Tuesday's shooting, an attempted murder charge under California Penal Code Sections 664 and 187 would require prosecutors to prove a direct, deliberate step toward taking a human life with malice aforethought, a standard outlined by the Shouse Law Group that carries potential sentences up to life imprisonment with parole.
How Vacaville Compares Regionally
Despite the repeated gunfire near Markham Avenue, Vacaville's overall violent crime numbers can be compared with those of some of its Solano County neighbors. The department polices Vacaville.
Still, the area has seen multiple shootings in recent years. Investigators were following leads, and as of Tuesday morning, no suspect description or motive had been released.
