A box truck heist turned into a scene of vigilante justice in downtown Pittsburgh when the owner pursued and detained the thief until police could intervene. The incident unfolded around 1 p.m. in the bustling streets, leading to a dramatic chase and confrontation that left passersby in disbelief.
The owner had stepped out to make a delivery near the 900 block of Penn Avenue when he noticed someone commandeering his vehicle. According to WTAE, the determined proprietor proceeded to sprint after the moving truck, managing to catch up quickly at a red light. It is here that the confrontation between the two men erupted into a physical altercation.
In a chaotic sequence of events, the suspect attempted to make a desperate getaway by driving the stolen vehicle onto a sidewalk, sending pedestrians scattering. WPXI reported that the truck went over a median and ploughed into trees, narrowly missing an individual on foot.
The truck owner managed to gain control of the steering wheel and used the emergency brake to halt the vehicle. It was at this point that another individual intervened to help keep the suspect restrained. "He got in through the passenger door and the men began fighting inside the vehicle," the box truck owner said, as detailed by WPXI, illustrating the struggle he undertook to stop the thief.
Authorities arrived on the scene to find the two men holding down the suspect. They took the accused into custody and transported him to a hospital for medical clearance ahead of expected charges. Fortunately, no injuries were reported despite the near-miss with a pedestrian and the havoc wreaked during the chase.
