Following the emergence of new evidence, a driver involved in a hit-and-run incident during an illegal street takeover on November 27 has faced additional charges, as a victim came forward after seeing herself in news coverage of the event. The suspect, identified as 19-year-old Jeffery H. Baker, already in custody for a myriad of offenses, now faces an additional count of Assault in the Third Degree and another for Failure to Perform the Duties of a Driver, according to a release from the Portland Police Bureau.
The Portland Police Bureau previously released video of the chaos revealing Baker's reckless behavior as he sought to dodge the police, the footage showing his car spiraling out of control and, eventually, crashing the police saying they are dedicated to curtailing such illegal activities that not only jeopardize the participants' safety but also imperil the lives of onlookers, innocent drivers, and the officers in response.
On the night of the illegal gathering at Northeast Cully Boulevard and Northeast Prescott Street, upwards of 40 street racers were reported, with one vehicle engaging in stunt driving that led to the victim's injuries. While initial efforts by responders were focused on locating the injured party, the subsequent investigation flagged a social media post that linked Baker to the vehicular assault. Upon the revelation of the social media post, swift police work pegged Baker as the culprit.
Enforcement efforts continued unabated as Baker was observed engaging in hazardous driving across multiple precincts before colliding with another motorist and fleeing on foot; though his flight was short-lived, the authorities were quick to close in. Once in custody, Baker was processed on numerous counts, including multiple instances of Assault in the Third Degree, Failure to Perform the Duties of a Driver, Attempt to Elude, DUII, Reckless Driving, and Reckless Endangerment, among others. The Portland Police Bureau stated the importance of addressing the recent surge in road lawlessness, underscoring their commitment to public safety.
