An early-morning scare on the tracks near Colfax sent about 13 Union Pacific freight cars off the rails just before dawn Saturday, blocking a stretch of line and drawing cleanup crews to the scene. The railroad said the derailment happened at roughly 3:20 a.m. and reported that no one was hurt, as per ABC10.
According to ABC10, Union Pacific told reporters that about 13 railcars derailed near State Highway 174 and Narrow Gauge Road and that "nothing was released" from the derailed cars. The company said crews were on site to assess damage and start clearing the right-of-way, while officials urged drivers and residents to steer clear as heavy equipment moved into place.
KCRA reported the derailment and confirmed the time and general location, noting that the railroad had not yet identified a cause. The station said the scene remained under control, with no injuries reported.
Where Exactly It Happened
The derailment occurred beside State Route 174 at Narrow Gauge Road, a rural stretch that links Colfax with nearby foothill communities, according to ABC10. The site sits just off the town’s rail corridor near the historic depot area, where freight traffic and occasional passenger trains typically roll through.
Cleanup, Safety And The Probe
KCRA said Union Pacific crews were leading the cleanup effort, with local agencies on stand-by to help if needed. Federal involvement had not been announced, and the railroad said investigators would work to determine what led to the derailment.
How This Fits Into A Broader Picture
Rail incidents have drawn extra scrutiny this year after several high-profile wrecks across the West. A recent Union Pacific derailment in Colorado that sent locomotives into the Gunnison River prompted a multi-agency environmental response and an ongoing cleanup, CPR News reported. While the Colfax derailment appears to have caused limited damage and no injuries so far, investigators will still have to determine whether track conditions, weather or equipment problems played any role.
We will update this story as Union Pacific and local officials release new information. Residents with questions or concerns about the area should keep an eye on official channels for safety and travel advisories.
