The Pennsylvania-based Prospector Baseball Group (PBG) is expanding its territory in Minor League Baseball as Ken Babby hands over the keys to both the Akron RubberDucks and Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp, as per the latest reports on the business maneuvering behind America’s pastime, cleveland.com and Sports Business Journal break down the deal, with the former confirming the sale and the latter providing a glimpse into the ambitions of the acquirers.
Babby’s relinquishment of his stake in Fast Forward Sports Group to PBG marks another pivot in the MiLB landscape, building on PBG's fresh acquisition of the Lancaster Stormers just a couple of months prior, which is part of a broader strategy to create a substantive portfolio in the league; according to Sports Business Journal, PBG’s top brass, composed of buddies Abbamondi and Boyer, are entertaining grand plans, "This is an interesting space," Abbamondi noted, and finding it only had one institutional player, saw "room for more than one.", a sentiment apparently shared across their growing enterprise as they have their eyes set on swelling to possibly 15 teams – both affiliate and independent league names included.
The move has local aftermath as well, Christopher Hardesty, executive director of the Downtown Akron Development Corporation, indicated a keen interest in the future of the RubberDucks and their relation to downtown revitalization efforts – he stated in The Akron Beacon Journal. "Now that I'm aware of the situation, we'll reach out, we'll schedule time to discuss and talk about the RubberDucks and we'll figure that out as we need to figure it out."
While the details of the financial transaction remain undisclosed with PBG’s reluctance to name investors thus far, the thread that ties these deals together, despite each weaving its own narrative, is the vision of a more competitive and perhaps diversified Minor League ecosystem, one where institutions like Diamond Baseball Holdings no longer fly solo in the market; these prospects have drawn attention to what the new ownership might pull out of its hat for the community, the fans, and the players, PBG is already in conversations, Abbamondi said, about its next potential team acquisitions, clearly implying that the RubberDucks and Jumbo Shrimp are just the beginning.
