Christmas Day, a time traditionally spent with family and loved ones, saw protestors unite outside of Broward Transitional Center in Deerfield Beach to show their support for the migrants detained within. "I think we need to be here for these people, show them that we care about them," said one protestor in a statement obtained by NBC Miami. Her concerns were echoed in her husband's observations about the palpable fear within his community of workers, "We are having roofs put on where we live, and half of the people did not show up because they are afraid of getting deported."
About 20 individuals stood outside the facility, armed with signs and dedication. Their messages were clear, with one sign stating "this is not normal," and another demanding to "abolish ICE immediately." Some protestors are part of the 50501 Movement, which, according to NBC Miami, is an online effort urging 50 protests in 50 states on one day—actions which kicked off on Feb. 5 and have evidently been gaining momentum since.
In an act of solidarity that mirrored the protest in Deerfield Beach, demonstrators gathered outside an ICE facility in Pompano Beach to decry the Trump administration’s immigration policies. A protestor, Nancy Horn, expressed her disbelief to WSVN, "The United States of America treating people like this, it’s unbelievable to me." Signs held by demonstrators bore strong statements such as “ICE can’t disappear all of us” and “Detention for Profits,” reflecting their stance on the privatization of detention centers.
Organizations such as Joyful Resistance, Resist Wilton Manors, and Wilton Manors Indivisible coordinated the protest, with members voicing their determination to continue the fight for those separated from their families. As WSVN reported, Christine Calareso Bleecker from Joyful Resistance stated, "On Christmas Day, it was important to shed light on the people inside that are missing their families on Christmas, and to show solidarity with the people on the outside missing loved ones that are wrongfully detained on the inside." The sentiment of being on "the right side of history" was a common thread among those gathered.
These Christmas Day protests come in the wake of escalating immigration enforcement measures under President Donald Trump's second term in office. The events acted as a manifestation of the ongoing discontent and disagreement with current immigration policies, urging not only political change but also a change in public awareness and sentiment. Organizers from the protest actions expressed a hope for increased engagement, planning future demonstrations every other Sunday to maintain visibility and pressure.
