The incidents began late at night, with more than 140 firefighters responding to the Maspeth residence. Video from the scene showed the intensity of the fire as responders worked to contain it. The blaze continued until approximately 4:30 a.m. In Springfield Gardens, a fire broke out near midnight in a building that formerly housed a community restaurant, reportedly starting on the second floor and quickly spreading. NBC New York reported that nearly 200 emergency personnel were deployed to address the fire.
The Red Cross has provided emergency assistance to at least 10 individuals, including a child, displaced by the Maspeth fire. In a statement to ABC7NY, the organization described its ongoing efforts to support those affected. The fires have also had broader impacts on the community, displacing residents and damaging familiar spaces.
Local residents reported the loss of the soul food restaurant on Guy R. Brewer Boulevard, which had served as a community landmark. Madgi Elkayfe, who works nearby, told NBC New York that the business and its associated apartment had been closed prior to the fire. He stated that the fire may have been linked to old wiring. The FDNY is now investigating both sites to determine the cause and to help prevent similar incidents in the future.
