An 8-year-old boy fell through the ice while playing on a Long Island pond on Christmas Day, prompting a 911 call around 1 p.m. Local police officers responded quickly, arriving at the Heatherwood Lakeside Village in East Patchogue.
Officers James Rizzo and Andrew Tirello used a life ring to reach the boy, while Highway Sgt. Michael Santillo crossed the ice to pull him from the chest-deep, freezing water, according to PIX11. The boy was unable to escape on his own before the officers’ swift intervention.
