Raleigh commuters have something to celebrate as the Interstate 440 improvement project hits a significant achievement. The west side of Raleigh's Beltline officially opened three travel lanes in both directions, stretching from Wade Avenue to Walnut Street, as reported by NCDOT.
This expansion marks the completion of widening efforts providing more than two lanes in each direction on this segment of I-440, a critical upgrade for one of the region's busiest thoroughfares. Not only does the current configuration enhance capacity, but it has also introduced collector-distributor lanes to both directions, which improve access to local roads such as Wade Avenue and Hillsborough Street, as per NCDOT.
Officials expect these improvements to facilitate a smoother traffic flow and advance safety measures along the corridor. While the main lanes are operating at full capacity, activities around the Beltline aren't winding down just yet. Some construction is continuing along the expanded sections and the bridges that intersect them. Motorists should remain alert and exercise caution as they navigate areas where crews are still hard at work.
