Raleigh's soundscape is set to change come the new year, with the City Council's approval of an updated noise ordinance. As shared in a recent social media post by the Raleigh Police Department, the alterations spring from a cocktail of input involving nearby residents, business owners, a swath of responses from an online survey, and the internal reflections of City staff.
The forthcoming regulation introduces a discernment between dB(A) — the realm of daily chatter and the like — and dB(C), which maps the terrain of deeper, bass-laden throbs. With this change, beginningnext Thursday, transgressors of the revamped ordinance can expect civil penalties with a wallet-thinning $1,500 fine tagged onto the third strike. Yet for those, burdened by a fourth violation, the punishment hardens into an absence of outdoor amplified sound equipment for a one-and-a-half-year span.
For those operating bars, restaurants, and clubs, Raleigh Police Department recommends a thorough review of the upcoming rules.
