The Raleigh Fire Department is stepping up its live fire training game. A revamped two-story structure at the Keeter Training Center has emerged, equipped with several rooms to mimic a residential situation. This enhancement comes as part of the department's ongoing efforts to better equip its firefighters for the realities they face when duty calls, as mentioned on the City's official website.
Back in 2009, the Raleigh Fire Department boosted its training repertoire by using a grant to secure a mobile container training system. This upgrade has provided immense value, offering a plethora of hands-on experience in combating live fires. Despite the system's age, the RFD's Professional Development team didn't just settle for wear and tear. Instead, they've spearheaded initiatives to revitalize the training tool, now adding an upper floor and multiple access points for practicing forced entry on sturdy, locked doors.
Assistant Chief Brian Sherrill underlined the significance of the update in a statement obtained by the official City of Raleigh news release, "This renovation has significantly expanded our on-site training capabilities." He further highlighted the importance, saying, “Now better than ever, we are able to equip our firefighters with essential skills for real-world scenarios.”
City officials said the renovations to the Keeter Training Center include an accessible breezeway and additional windows to support ladder training. The upgrades are designed to better simulate real fire and smoke conditions and help firefighters practice effective responses during emergencies.
