A pre-dawn drive on Telegraph Canyon Road in Chula Vista turned deadly yesterday when a car slammed into what police described as a violent, high-damage crash scene shortly before 3 AM.
Officers had been racing to the area after multiple 911 callers reported a reckless driver in the corridor, according to police. When they arrived, they found a heavily damaged vehicle and its driver unresponsive. Firefighters pulled the man from the wreck, but he was pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities have not released his name, pending notification of his family.
The Chula Vista Police Department said its Traffic Bureau has taken over the investigation.
According to FOX5 San Diego, the first 911 call pegged the location near Telegraph Canyon Road and Medical Center Drive, but officers ultimately found the crash closer to Telegraph Canyon Road and Apache Drive. The victim was described as a 45-year-old man, and his identity remained undisclosed as of Saturday. Witnesses or anyone with information were asked to contact the Chula Vista Police Traffic Bureau at 619-409-3817, the outlet reported.
"Investigators have not ruled out the possibility that drugs or alcohol may have been factors," officials told FOX5 San Diego. CVPD traffic investigators remained on scene for hours, piecing together what happened and working to clear the roadway. No arrests or charges had been reported as they reconstructed the crash.
Telegraph Canyon Corridor Has Seen Deadly Crashes
This stretch of Telegraph Canyon Road has been the backdrop to several fatal collisions in recent years. A two-car crash that killed two seniors at Apache Drive in August highlighted long-standing safety concerns along the corridor. A 2024 motorcycle fatality on the same road was covered by NBC 7 San Diego, further underscoring the risks in the area.
What Police Are Asking
The Chula Vista Police Traffic Bureau is urging anyone who saw the reckless driving, the crash itself, or who has video from the area to come forward. Tips and footage can be directed to the Traffic Bureau at 619-409-3817 so investigators can review potential leads and clarify the sequence of events.
Roads in the area were temporarily shut down while officers and cleanup crews worked the scene, and drivers were told to expect delays around Medical Center Drive and Apache Drive. We will update this story as authorities release more information.
