The months-long search for Jerica Hamre, a Nebraska mother who had been missing since July 2024, reached a tragic conclusion this past week. According to FOX 10 Phoenix, the Lincoln Police Department confirmed that Hamre's remains were discovered on December 17 on a rural farm in Furnas County, near Oxford. A representative of the property owner found the body while inspecting a remote outbuilding in preparation for a sale, marking an end to the 18 months filled with uncertainty surrounding her disappearance.
While confirming the discovery of the body, Capt. Ben Miller of the Lincoln Police Department conveyed the community's profound loss, stating, "Our heart breaks for Jerica’s family and friends who, for the last 18 months, have been searching for answers." A detail that has troubled investigators is that Hamre had no known connections to the property or its owners, leaving more questions in the wake of her death, which is being investigated as a homicide. As for the deceased, she had been dead for some time, with an autopsy conducted on Friday, subsequently confirming her identity.
As the case unfolds, authorities have pinpointed a person of interest, currently detained on unrelated charges, suggesting there is no ongoing threat to public safety. Police are said to be collaborating with experts to determine when precisely Hamre died, narrowing down the timeline of this tragic event. In a statement obtained by Alaska’s News Source, the Nebraska State Patrol indicated the apparent duration of Hamre's death.
Despite multiple agencies conducting searches, including one near Overton in October 2024, where no evidence relating to Hamre was found, answers remained elusive until now. Private investigator Erik Rezabek, representing BRING ‘Em home Nebraska, led a substantial search in July after receiving information about Hamre's cell phone activity. Telling KOLN, Rezabek said, "Our deepest condolences are with Jerica’s family and loved ones. While this is not the outcome anyone hoped for, we hope that having answers may bring some measure of closure after a long and painful period of uncertainty."
In the interim, Hamre's daughters have been under the care of her parents. With the investigation entering its next phase, authorities urge anyone who may possess information to come forward.
