An elderly man in his 80s was rescued by the Honolulu Fire Department after taking a 10-foot tumble on the Wailupe Gulch Trail in the Aina Haina area yesterday. At approximately 11:30 a.m., a 911 call alerted authorities to the injured hiker, initiating a response from six fire units consisting of 18 personnel, according to KHON2. The first crew arrived at the scene near 11:41 a.m., hiking up the trail to reach the man who suffered the fall and was unable to make his own way back down.
With serious injuries sustained from the fall, the man awaited the firefighters who administered a medical evaluation and basic life support at the scene, as reported by Hawaii News Now. In preparation for transport, while one crew trekked to assist the hiker, a second crew secured the landing zone for air operations. The rescue operation saw the hiker airlifted by the HFD's Air 1 helicopter to the designated landing zone.
Upon the hiker's arrival at the landing zone at approximately 12:43 p.m., as per KHON2, the Honolulu Fire Department handed over care to waiting Emergency Medical Services. EMS personnel provided immediate treatment and subsequently transported the man to a local hospital for further medical attention.
In light of the incident, fire officials have issued a reminder to the public, emphasizing the need for hikers to select trails that are suitable for their fitness levels and experience. As noted by KHON2, these recommendations are rooted in a realism that seeks to prevent such accidents from occurring, aiming to provide a safer hiking environment for all visitors to Hawaii's trails.
