In an announcement that celebrates diligence and resilience, Roan Mountain State Park has been recognized by the Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation (TDEC) for Excellence in Operations. Amidst a year fraught with hurdles, including the extensive 10-month closure wrought by Hurricane Helene, the park's staff has shown remarkable perseverance. According to TDEC, "The staff at Roan Mountain State Park embody the mission of having the best team possible for our parks."

Even as the park grappled to successfully reopen and deliver a semblance of normalcy to the community, visitor numbers notably dwindled. Nevertheless, the park continued to consistently operate across numerous functions - from their accommodation services, like campgrounds and cabins, to aspects such as interpretive programming and their revenue-generating gift shop. Internal endeavors to foster leadership and provide pathways for career advancement did not halt even under duress.

The award, part of an annual ceremony, showcases the park's outstanding achievement in enhancing the systems that are critical for effective park management. TDEC Commissioner David Salyers remarked, "Despite immense challenges, this park staff focused on employee excellence, and that led to a heightened visitor experience. We are pleased to recognize the park for its performance."

TDEC also doled out accolades to other parks in different categories. Excellence in Amenities went to Panther Creek State Park, Excellence in Resource Stewardship was awarded to Johnsonville State Historic Park, and Excellence in Visitor Experience was claimed by Henry Horton State Park. Notably, Justin P. Wilson Cumberland Trail State Park was named Park of the Year, a significant nod to the breadth of its offerings and service to patrons. These recognitions are reflective of an overarching aim to ensure that Tennessee's parks are not just maintained but are thriving spaces for both nature and human engagement.
