The City of Sacramento has completed the Del Rio Trail Bridge, concluding the project to link south Sacramento with downtown. The final phase of the Del Rio Trail, opened on Tuesday, provides a continuous route for pedestrians and cyclists over Interstate 5 and Riverside Boulevard. Mayor Kevin McCarty, Councilmember Rick Jennings, and representatives from the Department of Public Works and California State Parks attended the opening to welcome the community to the bridge.
Construction on the bridge was completed last Wednesday, following a delay earlier this year when city officials determined that the structure did not meet required specifications. Residents can now traverse the full 4.8-mile length of the Del Rio Trail without interruption. Adam Randolph, senior engineer with Public Works, acknowledged the delays and the trail’s completion in a statement to the City of Sacramento.
Most of the Del Rio Trail opened in May 2024, providing access to greenspaces, neighborhoods, and regional trails. The bridge, however, presented challenges; although it initially opened to the public, it required reconstruction to meet safety and design standards. In August, the previous overhang structure was removed and a new bridge was built to comply with all requirements.
The completed bridge extends the existing pathway and connects south Sacramento communities more directly with downtown. With the bridge in place, the Del Rio Trail provides a continuous route for pedestrians and cyclists, offering an alternative pathway that improves connectivity along the 4.8-mile trail.
