A 4-year-old child was shot and killed Monday afternoon inside a house on San Antonio's far Northwest Side, a tragedy that has rattled a usually quiet street, Police Chief William McManus said.

Officers were called around 3 p.m. to a home in the 10000 block of Windstone Creek, where they found the child wounded as the father tried to perform life-saving measures, according to authorities. The child was rushed to a hospital and later pronounced dead.

McManus told reporters that two 911 calls came in around the time of the shooting, one from inside the home and another from outside. Investigators recovered a handgun at the scene but have not released details on how the shooting occurred, and the timeline remains under review, the San Antonio Express-News reported.

The father is believed to be in his 50s and the mother in her 40s. Neighbors called the situation nerve-wracking and said they were shocked a child was killed on their block. Police have not confirmed whether the parents are cooperating with investigators.

Investigation Underway

Homicide detectives and a crime-scene unit processed the interior of the home and began canvassing the area for witnesses, MySanAntonio reported. Officials said there had been no prior calls for service to the residence.

Detectives are gathering physical evidence and interviewing neighbors and family members as they work to piece together what led to the deadly shooting. Police have not released the child's name and have asked the public to respect the family's privacy as they grieve.
