San Antonio's South Side community can look forward to increased public safety measures with the City Council's recent approval of a construction contract for a new police substation. Poised at the crossroads of 8811 S. Flores Street, this substation represents a major development as part of the 2022 Bond Program, an initiative supported by district voters, according to the City of San Antonio.
The project, which has its roots in the tenure of former Councilmember Rebecca Viagran, has been brought to fruition by her successor, and sister, Councilmember Phyllis Viagran. "This has been a long-awaited project that began with my predecessor and sister, Councilmember Rebecca Viagran," Phyllis Viagran shared in a statement. She continued, expressing her gratitude for the community's overwhelming support. Slated to begin in Fall 2025, the project aims to be fully operational by Spring 2027, as stated by the City of San Antonio.
The facility is designed to incorporate Patrol Operations, the San Antonio Fear Free Environment (SAFFE) Unit, and the Crisis Response Team. It will also be staffed with 28 sworn supervisory personnel and 7 civilian support staff. This team will be tasked with enhancing response times and fostering community policing efforts, thus addressing the dynamic needs of District 3 residents, as per the City of San Antonio.
Goals for the substation are ambitious yet clear: provide a hub for public safety, offer a welcoming space for residents to engage with officers, and boost overall trust and cooperation between law enforcement and the community, which, is increasingly significant in today's climate. Councilmember Viagran underscored the space's role in fostering harmony, "The substation will enhance public safety for the southern region of San Antonio and provide a welcoming space for residents to engage with local law enforcement, fostering trust, collaboration, and a safer environment for all," according to the City of San Antonio press release.
