As the holiday season begins, San Antonio urges residents to stay vigilant against crimes and accidents. SAPD and SAFD are providing safety guidelines to reduce theft, fires, and traffic accidents.
According to the City of San Antonio, Authorities emphasize vehicle safety: residents should stay aware of their surroundings, avoid cellphone distractions in parking lots, remove or hide valuables, lock vehicles, park in well-lit areas, and never drink and drive. For home safety, officials recommend retrieving mail daily, keeping gifts and trees out of sight, strengthening security systems, and maintaining good exterior lighting.
Fire safety precautions include careful use of indoor lights and electrical decorations to avoid overloading outlets or cords, turning off all holiday lights before leaving home or sleeping, and keeping Christmas trees fresh, watered, and away from heat sources and open flames. While cooking, avoid loose clothing, supervise hot surfaces, and keep flammable materials away from stoves and ovens. For heaters, maintain a ‘no-burn zone,’ and always turn them off before leaving home or sleeping.
The SAPD’s Holiday Crime Reduction Task Force works with businesses, community groups, and state law enforcement to reduce crime during the holidays. The city urges residents to report suspicious activity to help keep San Antonio safe year-round.
