Last Wednesday, a routine vehicle appraisal at CarMax in Colma took an unexpected turn when police were called to the scene for a welfare check. Upon their arrival at 401 Serramonte Boulevard, Colma officers encountered a man in the lobby who appeared to be intoxicated while attempting to have his vehicle appraised. The Colma Police Department shared the details of the arrest on their social media, describing how a seemingly mundane check spiraled into an arrest for DUI.
The officers claimed to have detected "the distinct odor of an alcoholic beverage emanating from his person" and noted he displayed signs of being under the influence. Following a series of field sobriety tests, the situation escalated when the officers attempted to place the man under arrest. A struggle reportedly began, with officers and the man falling to the ground as they tried to handcuff him successfully. The Colma Police Department's account, shared on their official Facebook page, does not provide details about the struggle but confirms that the subject was eventually detained.
The man in question, identified as 46-year-old Simon Kumar of San Bruno, was arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol. After subduing Kumar, the officers were able to take him into custody. He was later booked into the San Mateo County Jail, and his vehicle was impounded.
