The weather rollercoaster continues for San Diego County as high temperatures are expected to surpass the average by up to 25 degrees in some inland areas today. Come Friday, though, temperatures will start to cool off thanks to an onshore flow, as reported by the National Weather Service San Diego. Today's scorching highs, ranging from around 70 degrees near the coast to the mid-80s in the valleys, will give way to more moderate temperatures in the 60s and 70s across the region over the weekend.
This short-term warm spell is forecasted to peak today, with some inland valleys and lower desert regions potentially breaking temperature records. According to the NWS San Diego, "High temperatures for today will range from around 70 near the coast to the upper 70s to mid 80s for the valleys and for the lower deserts." And as for the cooling, it's expected to start sweeping in on Friday, making for a noticeably milder Saturday. However, the weather is slated to remain quite warm for this time of year, with inland areas still seeing temperatures 12 to 18 degrees above average.
Heading further into the week, the weather is set to not only cool down but also become damp, as the NWS San Diego anticipates a low-pressure system to bring an "increasing chances for rain beginning Tuesday with widespread heavy rainfall beginning on Wednesday." This suggests that the holiday season may be a wet one, with heavy rains potentially continuing into the last weekend before December comes to a close. For those dreaming of a white Christmas, though, it may remain just that – a dream – with snow levels expected to stay above 7000 feet.
With precipitation likely on the horizon, the NWS warns of a 55 percent chance for 3 inches or more of rainfall in the eastern San Gabriel Mountains, with the potential for even heavier downpours. San Diegans should keep their rain boots handy and prepare to possibly cozy up inside as the festive week approaches. Meanwhile, the marine forecast remains calm, with no hazardous conditions anticipated through Monday, except for some patchy fog that may reduce visibility on coastal waters in the mornings.
