The San Diego County Sheriff's Office, in a continued effort to improve healthcare within the jail system, has formed an innovative partnership with Paradise Valley Hospital. This joint endeavor, announced last year, has resulted in the creation of a secure, dedicated treatment area within the hospital for individuals in the Sheriff's custody who require medical attention. In figures highlighted by the Sheriff's Office, there was an uptick in the number of incarcerated individuals needing hospital care, with over 2,700 such instances this year, up from 2,600 in 2024.
The two-year collaboration has focused on improving resource allocation, for example, by keeping deputies on duty rather than having them tied up with hospital visits. "Partnerships, such as this innovative collaboration with Paradise Valley Hospital, will ensure resources are prioritized where they should be: on the individual requiring critical medical care and deputies relived from time-consuming hospital runs so they can return to where their presence is truly needed," Sheriff Kelly Martinez was quoted in a release from the San Diego County Sheriff’s Office. This dedicated unit, which started operating on December 1, is a step towards consolidating medical services for the incarcerated across fewer locations, thereby improving care and efficiency.
To comply with medical and security standards, the Sheriff’s Office and hospital administrators worked closely with regulatory bodies, including the California Department of Health Care Access and Information. The secure treatment area is designed to operate independently of the hospital services available to the general public and is accessible only to authorized personnel. The Sheriff’s Office has been diligent in ensuring that safety and compliance regulations are strictly followed.
Emphasizing the partnership's significance, Paradise Valley Hospital CEO Neerav Jadeja praised the shared commitment to public service, "Their commitment to provide a higher level of healthcare for the individuals in their care strongly aligns with our mission. Together, we’ve developed a solution that meets their needs while allowing us to maintain the exceptional standard of care our community expects," Jadeja told the San Diego County Sheriff’s Office. This partnership not only marks Sheriff Martinez’s dedication to detention services reform but also underscores a broader mission to modernize the County’s jail system and enhance the treatment and outcomes for incarcerated individuals.
