In an annual gesture of holiday goodwill, the San Diego Rescue Mission provided a festive meal, alongside essential services to nearly 1,000 individuals facing homelessness and housing insecurity this past Saturday. Reported by the Times of San Diego, the event at the Elm Street homeless shelter in Bankers Hill served a traditional roast turkey dinner with all the trimmings. In addition, guests at the community outreach meal had access to hot showers, haircuts, live music, medical care, and pet services.
"Christmas at the Rescue Mission is truly a community celebration," said Donnie Dee, president and CEO of the San Diego Rescue Mission, in a statement obtained by the Times of San Diego. The partnership and generosity of volunteers and donors ensured that "No one should feel alone at Christmas, and thanks to this community, our guests won’t." As part of the mission's support, participants were offered free backpacks, hygiene supplies, medical services, and spiritual support. Transportation was also facilitated through the Rescue Mission's "HOPE" vans from designated sites such as the O and B safe camping spots and The Neil Good Day Center.
The mission's impact this year extended beyond the holiday festivities. According to the Times of San Diego, the San Diego Rescue Mission provided 1,319 people with immediate shelter and aided 293 individuals in securing permanent housing. Additionally, the mission celebrated the achievements of 160 graduates from its year-long Mission Academy Residential Program, which equals a record for the organization.
For some, the event offered more than just a meal; it provided a moment of warmth in the otherwise cold reality of uncertainty. "I’m very grateful and thankful for this. Its been awhile since I had good homemade cooking," Kenneth Perales told NBC San Diego during their coverage of the event. While the Rescue Mission's efforts throughout the year are nothing short of monumental, the holiday season stands out as a time when the spirit of giving comes to the forefront, offering a much-needed dose of hope and joy to those it serves.
