The holiday spirit is set to fully envelop Balboa Park this December, as the annual December Nights celebration returns for its 48th iteration. Scheduled for the first weekend of the month, the event has adapted with the times to ensure attendees can safely enjoy a myriad of festive offerings.
According to Inside San Diego, December Nights will take place from Friday, December 5, to Saturday, December 6. This year, San Diego's signature holiday event is expected to draw a crowd of over 350,000 people over the two days. To ensure inclusivity and holiday cheer for all, the city-sponsored festival will remain free of charge, cementing its status as California's largest holiday festival that doesn't charge an admission fee.
Mayor Todd Gloria expressed enthusiasm for the longstanding tradition, saying, "December Nights has been part of San Diego’s story for nearly five decades, bringing families, neighbors, and visitors together to share the season’s joy." In a display of the local allegiance, Frankie J, a platinum-selling artist and San Diego native, is set to headline musically at the event with a live performance in the Plaza de Panama.
Adding to the mix of merriment, attendees can look forward to a new après-ski inspired tavern adjacent to the main stage, providing a prime viewing location to catch the holiday light show projected onto the Museum of Art facade. This 21-and-over lounge is designed to momentarily transport guests to a cozy alpine setting, complete with holiday cocktails and pub games. The inclusion of more than 1,600 performers and over 200 food and retail booths ensures that there truly is something to catch everyone's interest.
The festival will commence with a tree lighting ceremony at 6 p.m. on the Spreckels Organ Pavilion stage. The event will be led by Mayor Gloria and City Council President Joe LaCava, alongside various media emcees, as they initiate the celebration amidst much anticipation. Balboa Park aims to transform into a "winter-inspired wonderland," as the narrative continues with a robust roster of activities in the Family Zone, as reported by Inside San Diego. These range from free Ferris wheel rides to DIY holiday art projects, reassuring that the weekend will serve up holiday fun for families aplenty.
In an effort to encourage sustainable practices during the festivities, the City of San Diego has championed campaigns to promote recycling and alternative transportation options to attending guests. Special arrangements, including free bike valet services and augmented public transport schedules, detail the city's focus on environmental responsibility.
Community partnerships have been key in amplifying the festival's reach. Notably, support from San Diego Gas & Electric, alongside Jewish Family Service, and the San Diego County Toyota Dealers, paired with the San Diego Rescue Mission, is tapping into the spirit of giving by organizing collections for those in need during the holiday season. For all this and more, festival-goers are urged to visit DecemberNights.org for full details, maps, and schedules.
