Residents at the Thomas Paine Square Apartments in the Fillmore district of San Francisco were met with an unexpected and unsettling holiday surprise when they discovered that their Christmas gifts had been stolen from their homes. According to ABC7 News, tenants have implicated staff members from the property management company Domus Management as the culprits behind these thefts.
Notably distressing for the victims was the exploitation of trust, given that the alleged thieves are employees tasked with maintaining the building. Aveda Hussain, a caregiver for one of the tenants, said, "They took over $2000 in Christmas items." These accusations are grounded in video evidence, which appears to show management staff removing wrapped presents mere days before Christmas. The footage, showing the individuals allegedly breaking into homes and making off with the items in hand, is a bitter tableau of violated sanctuary and broken trust.
Domus Management Company has since confirmed that the people captured on video were indeed their employees and has executed decisive action. "The people involved were terminated and key access to these units was revoked," said Cathy M. Metcalf, President of Domus Management, in a phone interview via ABC7 News.
Further complexities arise as Metcalf claims the tenants are considered "squatters," a term absolutely denied by Hussain, who insists the tenant she cares for is legally entitled to live in the property. Some tenants, such as Barbara Carthen, Treasurer of the Tenant Association, have not only called for the perpetrators to undergo strict drug tests and thorough background checks but also raised concerns about erratic rent fluctuations and previous suspicious incidents in the complex, as detailed by ABC7 News.
A similarly troubling account was reported by Mission Local, where tenant Rhonda alleged that her bike and power tools vanished from her unit's garage. This incident's timing, paralleled with the thefts, further implicates the possibility of an internal security breach. In the face of these alarming events, District 5 Supervisor Bilal Mahmood has been notified and pledged to do whatever is possible to support the victims and seek justice. "I’ve seen the footage, it is pretty damning," Mahmood said, confirming his commitment to address the situation.
