In a heartwarming episode that brought some festive joy to kids dealing with health challenges, Santa Claus recently swapped his sleigh for a helicopter, touching down at the Johns Hopkins Children's Center in Baltimore. As part of a cherished tradition aimed to lift the spirits of young patients, Santa made the rounds, his bag of gifts in tow, collecting holiday wish lists from enthusiastic kids and sharing moments of cheer.
Witnessed by families and staff, the event turned the hospital into a seasonal wonderland for a short while, providing a much-needed distraction from the day-to-day rigor of medical treatments. According to WMAR-2 News, Kaleigh Drengwitz, mother of two-and-a-half-year-old Adrianna, who suffered a burn, expressed how "a little bit of extra joy is really exciting" for everyone involved. Even as they receive excellent care, the joys of the season can often seem distant for children like Adrianna and 13-year-old Rylan Buchanan, who, battling a brain tumor, would soon celebrate his last radiation treatment.
Dr. David Hackam, head of pediatric surgery and co-director of the center, believes in the therapeutic value of such events. He told WMAR-2 News, "We know that for kids to get better, they've got to feel better." Dr. Hackam stressed the importance of making children feel included, especially during a time when they're away from the comforts of home during the holidays.
The charitable spirit extended beyond the hospital's walls, as the Baltimore Ravens, led by linebacker Roquan Smith, engaged in a generosity bout, escorting children from the Bridges Baltimore after-school program on a holiday shopping spree. As reported by CBS News Baltimore, the Ravens players, on their off day, helped kids shop for their families, while also gifting them Roquan Smith jerseys and throwing a pizza party. "I think it's just a reflection of each and every guy in the locker room and who they are, and not as players but more so as people," Smith said, highlighting the team's commitment to community engagement.
