What the project will deliver
The FM 1518 Expansion reconstructs roughly 5.6 miles of roadway between FM 78 and I-10 and adds two 11 foot travel lanes in each direction, a 34 foot wide raised center median, a 10 foot shared use path on the east side and a 6 foot sidewalk on the west. According to TxDOT, the work is broken into four phases that began in spring 2024 and wrap up with median installation and final paving in the last phase. The agency lists the project cost at about $73 million.
Progress this season
Local reporting has pegged the project budget at $72.78 million and notes that crews completed the eastern half of the Trainer Hale Road intersection, along with new northbound lanes and a shared use path south of Trainer Hale, in 2025. In partnership with CPS Energy and the city of Schertz, utility upgrades and underground storm sewer work were also finished along parts of the corridor. According to Community Impact, crews are currently widening the roadway at the Woman Hollering Creek Bridge, with that work scheduled to wrap up by the end of December.
Contractor, pace and on-site challenges
SER Construction Partners LLC is serving as the prime contractor, with Jacobs as the project designer, and crews have encountered field conditions that required on-the-ground redesigns. SER's project manager told Construction Equipment Guide that "design details may have been unintentionally omitted" in some locations, which forced alternate approaches and additional engineering reviews. The outlet also reported that about 44 percent of the work had been completed as of mid November, with bridge widening and drainage improvements now taking center stage on site.
What drivers and neighbors should expect
TxDOT says the stretch of roadway between Lower Seguin Road and I-10 is anticipated to be completed in summer 2026, with the final phases of median work and paving running through spring 2028. Motorists can expect daytime lane shifts, reduced speed limits through active construction zones and occasional night or weekend closures when major operations are scheduled, according to the agency.
