The city of Scottsdale recently hosted the 2025 Scottsdale Employee & Volunteer Awards, an event designed to give props to those public servants and community members who go above and beyond the bare expectations. According to coverage by the city's official news site, a slew of dedicated individuals, from police chiefs to solid waste operators, were recognized for their standout contributions to the city's operations and welfare.
City Manager Greg Caton had a thing or two to point out about the level of expertise on display, stating, "Our employees continue to show what effective public service looks like." It seems, through the various accolades doled out, Scottsdale aimed to shine a light on those often found working behind the scenes to quickly and effectively serve the public. Distinct awards were handed out to professionals spread out across the municipal spectrum, celebrating acts of innovation, kindness, and unflagging duty.
Among the honored was Police Chief Joseph LeDuc, who nabbed the Herb Drinkwater Award for his notable leadership and community service efforts. "Chief Joseph LeDuc was honored for his decades of leadership, community service and unwavering commitment to the Scottsdale community," the news release stated. Human Services Supervisor Jonathan Montoya was awarded the Bill Donaldson Award for his adept handling of a food bank transition to a new location without halting services. Volunteer Mich Thomas took home the William P. Schrader Volunteer Impact Award for his fervent advocacy and involvement in Scottsdale’s adaptive recreation programs.
One poignant tale of selfless behavior came from Solid Waste Equipment Operator Horacio Ventura, celebrated with the Unsung Hero Award. His simple act of roadside assistance, an unasked-for gesture of pure kindness, was called out for demonstrating "integrity, professionalism and a genuine commitment to serving others." The Cactus Aquatics Team received the People’s Choice Award, celebrated for their life-saving resuscitation efforts during a recent emergency. These stories might just inspire others in the community to similarly strive for a higher mark in their day-to-day encounters.
