On Christmas Day, a concerning discovery was made at a local park near an elementary school when a semi-automatic AR-10 rifle was found abandoned, as reported by KSAT. The firearm was located around 11 a.m. in the 3100 block of Fidelia Drive, which is in close proximity to Spicewood Park Elementary School, prompting an immediate response from the San Antonio Police Department.
According to details provided by the same KSAT report, the weapon, which has not been reported as stolen nor has an owner been identified, was discovered by a witness who promptly reached out to authorities, prompting a swift recovery of the weapon by the San Antonio Police; however, it remains unclear whether the firearm was deserted by mistake, deliberately discarded, or placed with intent to conceal.
Separately, Fox San Antonio further detailed that the rifle was found on the trail at Spicewood Park, not far from Spicewood Elementary, and police made sure to secure the weapon before taking it into custody for safekeeping; they currently hold the firearm in a property room and are actively investigating the incident.
The San Antonio Police Department is urging anyone with information about the AR-10 style rifle to come forward, and in the statement obtained by Fox San Antonio, they request that individuals who recognize the firearm or have any information on the weapon to call them at (210) 207-7273, they're continuing the investigation into the rifle's origins, ownership and reason for being left in such a public and sensitive area.
