In a move to safeguard educational resources for children and families in Klamath Falls, Oregon, U.S. Senators Ron Wyden and Jeff Merkley are pushing the Trump Administration to unleash grant funds urgently required for the Klamath Family Head Start program. The program, which has served the community since 1980, finds itself in a precarious financial position, with the threat of foreclosure looming over its primary facility. According to a press release by Senator Wyden, the program submitted a complete application for funding over six months ago but has not received any update from the Office of Head Start (OHS).
The clock is ticking for Klamath Family Head Start; their lender has set a deadline of December 18, 2025, to extend the mortgage, if they don't secure the funds, they could lose their building which is a critical hub for 180 children and families and also provides employment for more than 40 staff members, this potential displacement warranting a quick and decisive response from the Health and Human Services' OHS. Merkley and Wyden underscored the jeopardy facing the program, emphasizing that "foreclosure of the building would be devastating for the community." as mentioned on Senator Wyden press release
Both senators have been outspoken in their request for an expedited review process, reaching out to Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. to express their concerns.
