A Sunday night argument in Gresham turned violent when a 67-year-old man was shot in the left thumb outside on the street, according to Chicago police.
Officers were called about 8:31 p.m. to the 7600 block of South Stewart Avenue after the man reported the dispute. He told police an unknown man pulled a gun during the confrontation and fired, hitting him in the hand before taking off.
The victim was taken to St. Bernard Hospital, where he was listed in good condition. The shooter had already fled by the time officers arrived.
Area Two detectives are handling the investigation and, as the Chicago Police Department confirmed to FOX 32 Chicago, no arrests have been made. Detectives are reviewing what witnesses have told them and are asking anyone with information or video to get in touch.
Investigators Seek Witnesses
Police say neighbors or drivers who were in the area around 8:30 p.m. could hold crucial details about how the argument escalated and who pulled the trigger. Even quick cellphone clips, doorbell camera footage or small observations are the kinds of things detectives often lean on to piece together what happened.
Stewart Avenue Has Seen Violence Before
The 7500 to 7600 blocks of South Stewart have a long history of gun violence and community tension, a pattern that has left many residents wary of heading out after dark. In a widely covered 2019 incident near 75th and Stewart, two volunteers were killed, highlighting ongoing safety concerns in the area, as reported by Block Club Chicago.
Chicago police say they will release more information if it becomes available. This story will be updated as investigators or hospital officials provide additional details.
