The local sports community is acknowledging the death of Siena University men's lacrosse coach Liam Gleason, who passed away at age 41 after an accident at his home. According to NBC News, the incident took place on a Sunday, with several emergency calls reporting a “fall downstairs” at his residence in Clifton Park.
His death comes only months after he led Siena to its first Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) title since 2014. Gleason served as head coach for seven seasons and was recently named the MAAC’s 2025 coach of the year. In a statement obtained by NBC News, Siena President Chuck Seifert said, “A sudden, senseless loss carries a kind of pain that defies understanding.” The university community has noted the impact of his leadership and his role within the institution.
CBS News reported that during a tribute, members of the lacrosse community, including Siena players and staff, as well as representatives from the University at Albany athletic department, stood in respect as Gleason was moved through a hospital corridor before undergoing surgery to donate his organs. His death was announced shortly afterward.
Gleason, who competed at Division II Adelphi University and the University at Albany, is recognized for his long-term involvement in the Capital Region’s lacrosse community. In information shared with NBC News, the University at Albany stated that he progressed from being a student-athlete to serving on the coaching staff, and that his work had a meaningful impact on those he interacted with.
Gleason is survived by his wife, Jaclyn, their three children, Kennedy, Penn, and Tate, as well as his parents, Kevin and Susan, and his brother, Brendan. As the community offers support to the Gleason family, a funeral service is scheduled for Saturday at 11 a.m. at the UHY Center at Siena.
