In Cypress Hills, Brooklyn, a Sweet Sixteen party was disrupted by gunfire, resulting in injuries to six teenagers aged 15 to 17. The NYPD responded to the incident outside the Burbuja Events venue on Atlantic Avenue shortly after 1 a.m. yesterday. The injured were transported to Brookdale University Hospital and Kings County Hospital, where they are reported to be in stable condition, according to Gothamist.
The venue stated on social media that a Sweet Sixteen party had ended and that no shots were fired inside the building. NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch said at yesterday’s press conference that security camera footage showed both individuals displayed firearms and discharged multiple rounds toward a crowd gathered outside of the venue, as reported by Gothamist.
Surveillance video showed people running for cover during the gunfire. A neighbor told NBC New York that he heard approximately 20 shots and took cover with his daughter. Police are continuing their search for the two suspected shooters involved in the incident. Neighbors expressed concern about the violence; Jesus Garcia said he was in shock over the events.
While the motivation behind the shooting has not been confirmed, Commissioner Tisch suggested it appears to be gang-related. The NYPD stated that detectives are continuing to follow all leads in the investigation to apprehend those responsible for the violence, which occurred during what was intended to be a celebratory event, as stated by Gothamist.
