In the early hours of today in Snohomish County, tragedy struck when a driver lost their life after their vehicle became submerged in a flooded roadway. Firefighters and rescue crews responded to the incident around 1:30 a.m. at the 6600 block of Marsh Road, as reported by KOMO News. A rescue swimmer, arriving shortly after the call was made, managed to extract the victim from the vehicle. Despite the immediate commencement of CPR by crews, the individual was pronounced dead at the scene.
Floodwaters had enveloped the area following major flooding across western Washington the previous week. According to FOX 13 Seattle, the driver purportedly bypassed road closure signs before the vehicle veered off the road and into approximately six feet of water. In the dash against time, the water, holding the car, refused to give up the vehicle as the rescue teams arrived and found it completely submerged.
The victim is believed to be a 33-year-old man. However, further details regarding his identity will be confirmed by the Snohomish County Medical Examiner's Office, which will also determine the cause and manner of death. At this juncture, it remains unclear whether drugs or alcohol were factors in the incident, as noted by sheriff's office representatives in a statement obtained by KOMO News.
This fatal event marks the first reported casualty associated with the recent floods that have rocked the region. With a warning from the Snohomish County Sheriff's Office about the peril of flooded roads, it has been emphasized that looks can be deceiving when it comes to assessing water depth on roadways. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have also reported that most flood-related deaths are a result of vehicles being driven into dangerous waters, casting a shadow as the receding floodwaters uncovered the submerged car, as KING 5 News highlighted. With more heavy rain and wind expected to strike Tuesday night, officials are urging the public to heed the emergency signage to prevent further tragedies.
Investigations into the incident continue as the community braces for another bout of severe weather, which could lead to additional flooding through Wednesday, compounding the area's woes. The incident serves as a reminder of the hazardous conditions that can arise quickly during extreme weather events and the importance of abiding by road closure notices.
