Doctors in South Florida are reporting an increase in pediatric injuries related to e-bikes and e-scooters. Local 10 News reported that Nicklaus Children's Hospital has seen trauma cases more than double this year compared to last year, with some serious injuries including punctured lungs, broken bones, and internal organ damage.

Dr. Patricio Lau, a pediatric trauma surgeon at the hospital, said the number of high-level trauma cases has risen significantly. Malvina Duncan, an injury prevention coordinator at Nicklaus Children’s Hospital, noted that these devices are designed for older teens and young adults, and children using them face higher risks, CBS News Miami reported.

Safety experts recommend wearing helmets and protective gear, avoiding distractions, and having experience with regular biking or scooting before using e-bikes or e-scooters. The American Academy of Pediatrics advises children under 16 not to operate these devices. Some states are considering laws for minimum age requirements and speed limits to reduce injuries.
