The city of South Pasadena unveiled a fresh oasis for its residents with the opening of Dr. Beatriz Solis Memorial Park, a community hub dedicated to the memory of the respected advocate for education, equity, and inclusion. Los Angeles County Supervisor Kathryn Barger, alongside other officials, commemorated this addition to the neighborhood at a ribbon-cutting ceremony that marked South Pasadena's continued investment in enhancing communal spaces.
“This beautiful new park is a lasting tribute to Dr. Beatriz Solis and the remarkable impact she had on this community and beyond,” Barger said in a statement. Located at 2006 Berkshire Avenue, the park's completion showcases what can be achieved when local and County governments collaborate to uplift the standard of living for their constituents. South Pasadena itself committed $275,000 in Measure A funds, demonstrating its vested interest in crafting accessible public realms of high-caliber.
Attendees at the event also heard from Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors Chair and First District Supervisor Hilda L. Solis, who spoke to the park's deeper meaning and her sister's lasting influence. "My sister, Dr. Beatriz Solis, devoted her life to ensuring that communities too often left behind had a voice and the resources to thrive,” Hilda Solis remarked. She paralleled her sister’s values with those inherent to the new public space, emphasizing the park as a venue for healing, wellness, and cultivating community connections.
Dr. Beatriz Solis, the park's namesake, was a South Pasadena local who had fervently stood for social equality and helped foster resources for those in less fortunate circumstances. The memorial park aims to be more than just a playground or a series of walkways; it's designed as a testament to her life's mission and her belief in the significance of public spaces for communal well-being. “She believed public spaces, like public health, should uplift people and bring them together," Hilda Solis added. With the park now open, her vision will endure, providing a space for future generations to enjoy the fruits of her advocacy.
